Head Lice and Halloween
What do vampires and head lice have in common? Well, they are both scary and suck your blood! That’s right, head lice are parasites that live and feed exclusively on the human head. If that isn’t scary enough, did you know that reported head lice cases spike around Halloween time? And let us tell you, head lice can last long after the candy is gone.
Many experts believe that the increase in head lice cases around Halloween is due to the fact that many kids and adults try on and share Halloween costume accessories like hats, wigs and masks.
With lice lurking in many parts of Kitchener-Waterloo, be sure to follow these tips and have your Halloween be creepy crawly…in a good way!
- Tip #1: Children should not share or try on their friends’ costume items, particularly hats, masks, wigs, etc.
- Tip #2: Put all new or borrowed costumes in a sealed plastic bag for 48 hours before wearing. Without a host to feed on, any head lice will die within 48 hours. Short on time? Check the label and if possible throw it in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes before wearing them.
- Tip #3: Visually inspect any head gear in-store for bugs before trying it on. This might be tough with wigs but masks and hats shouldn’t be.
- Tip #4: Be observant. If you notice your child scratching or picking his or her scalp, contact Lice Clinics of Canada to schedule a same-day head check for peace-of-mind. If you have lice, we can treat you on the spot and get rid of the lice in one visit.
Halloween is a great time to be with your family and friends. Try not to let lice scare you; leave that to all the vampires out there!
