How NOT telling other parents your child has lice can backfire
There is a stigma around lice and it needs to be removed. As soon as someone hears the words “head lice” they immediately feel itchy and stressed.
When a family member has lice, hours are spent on house cleaning, laundry, combing and checking other additional family members.
Let’s end the stigma
Unfortunately, there is still such a stigma attached to having lice that most parents will not tell other parents in fear of their child being made fun of or to avoid gossip that the family is “dirty or unclean”.
With all the research that is out there showing how contagious lice are through head-to-head contact and how susceptible anyone with hair is to contracting lice, it is sad to see that so many families keep lice a secret.
Don’t waste time and money
The downside to this is that when a parent chooses NOT to tell other parents, especially those they’ve recently been in contact with, those other parents are probably not actively checking their kids for head lice.
This, in turn, will allow time to pass and any recently acquired cases of head lice will grow and get passed along to other children, increasing the chances of the original child getting re-infested.
By not telling other families that your child has/had lice, you risk losing time and money. You spend time and money to get rid of the lice infestation and if your child goes back around one of the families you did not tell, they may get it again.
We need to end the stigma around lice, so that it does not get passed back and forth. Make it a comfortable, non-threatening experience for a parent to openly communicate with other parents about the stress they are dealing with.
Even better, add a touch of humour and make it known that it is very common.
