What should you know when dealing with a head lice infestation?
So, you’ve spotted lice in your child’s hair. Now, you’re wondering if you have it worry. Take a minute, and just breathe. We’re going to help you with providing information on what you should know when dealing with a head lice infestation.
Learning about lice
Head lice are simple creatures, but also very smart creatures. Lice need only need about an eighth of an inch of to survive and are not really picky about whose head they infest.
There are many myths out there that lice prefer clean hair, but the truth is, lice are not bias. They don’t care if your hair is clean or dirty, curly or straight. Direct head-to-head contact is the easiest way to spread lice, as it allows them to easily crawl from hair strand to hair strand, infesting a new host.
It’s important to remember to keep hair in a ponytail or braid while at school, a sleepover, or simply visiting friends and/or family. Head lice don’t care what type of hair, race, gender, or economic status you are, they just love that you have hair and a source for them to feed off.
Dealing with an active case of lice
When you have an active lice infestation, you don’t need to shave your head. Although cutting it will make the process easier. When dealing with lice, it’s important to remember that they can’t jump or fly, and they can’t survive off the head for more than 48 hours.
If you’re treating more than one family member at home, remember to soak your metal terminator comb in boiling hot water for five to 10 minutes before combing the next person. If going this route, we recommend purchasing a bottle of active rinse to use before or after combing the hair thoroughly. The active rinse will kill any live bugs in the hair, but will not kill the eggs, so it’s important to keep combing for 30 to 60 minutes each day, until you get three consecutive days without finding in eggs or bugs in the hair.
Learn the facts about head lice and check yourself and your family at least once every two weeks. Keep a bottle of preventive spray on your counter and spray yourself and your kids before heading out in the morning. Lice’s worst nightmare is someone who knows how to handle them before an outbreak.
Most importantly, be prepared and stay calm and know how to treat lice fast and effectively.

Of course, we recommend being treated by a professional, but we understand this isn’t always easy for some families. If an infestation occurs, it is important to be prepared and stay calm. Head lice is not your fault or anyone else, they just happen.
